Multi-buyer PPA to decarbonise snacking

Cargill and Mars step up their ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of multi-buyer deal, Cargill (American multinational food corporation) and Mars (American multinational food corporation) signed virtual PPAs in 2024 with Ocean Breeze Energy (German energy supplier). Cargill is a supplier of Mars, helping decarbonise the snack-giant’s supply chain.

Over the six-plus year term of the agreement, Cargill’s portion of the project averages 35 MW and is anticipated to produce 712,000 MWh of clean energy, effectively avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of 442 000 metric tonnes CO2 equivalent.

Mars joined the initiative with a 15 MW share expected to generate 320 000 MWh of clean electricity, thereby mitigating greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 77 440 metric tonnes CO2 equivalent.

“Cargill’s commitment to climate action spans our entire business and focuses on feeding a growing global population more sustainably. This partnership with Ocean Breeze and Mars is a great step forward in our efforts to reduce operational emissions and decarbonize the food and agriculture industry.”
Christina Yagjian, Global Renewable Energy Leader, Cargill
“Collaboration is a must for the global community to drive impactful climate action and reach emission reduction goals outlined by the best available science. The partnership between Ocean Breeze, Cargill and Mars on the use of clean energy is the latest instance of the Mars investment and long-term commitment to a better, more sustainable tomorrow.”
