Solar PV for Italian steel manufacturers

Iberdrola (Spanish multinational electric utility company) and Acciaierie Venete Spa (Italian steel manufacturer) signed a multi-year off-site corporate PPA for a capacity of 12 MW. The agreement supplies green energy from one of Iberdrola’s photovoltaic plants for a total of 230 GWh over the contract period.

The energy supplied will help reduce annual CO2 emissions by around 6,960 tonnes. This positive impact is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of about 64,000 trees, or meeting the energy needs of around 5,800 households.

"This partnership with Iberdrola is consistent with our commitment to sustainability and should be seen as part of a decarbonisation process that aims to reduce specific CO2 emissions by more than 50% by 2030".
Francesco Semino, Director of External Relations, Acciaierie Venete Spa

More green power for steel producers

Similarly, Feralpi Group (Italian steel manufacturer) and Enfinity Global (renewable energy solutions provider) inked a solar PPA for  23 GWh per year of solar energy in Italy.

Under the terms of the ten year corporate PPA, Feralpi will receive clean energy from a 15.5 MW solar plant owned by Enfinity and located in Emilia Romagna, Italy.

The energy covered by the agreement will be supplied to Feralpi’s industrial sites in Northern Italy, helping the company eliminate 8,625 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, equivalent to the emissions of 6,750 cars in Italy annually.

"The steel industry is energy intensive, and for this reason, energy is a crucial lever for accelerating our decarbonization path. We are electrifying our industrial processes, where possible, to eliminate fossil fuels, and in this technological evolution, the use of renewable sources is a fundamental driver of the transition. The PPA signed with Enfinity allows us to take another significant step forward toward lower emission steel within our energy strategy."
