Electro-intensive industries working with renewables
Salzgitter (German steel production company) signed a total of five corporate PPAs in 2024 to secure more clean electricity, hedge against rising electricity prices, and underpin its objective of producing green steel:
- 10-year PPA with Octopus Energy Generation (British renewable energy investor) and supported by Pexapark (Swiss renewables advisory business) for 126 000 MWh from solar energy;
- 15-year PPA with Iberdrola Deutschland (electric utility company) for 60 GWh of electricity from solar energy;
- 7-year PPA with RWE Supply & Trading (energy trading company) for up to 64 GWh of electricity from solar energy;
- 15-year PPA with Vattenfall (Swedish energy company) for 300 GWh of electricity from wind energy;
- 15-year PPA with Energiekontor AG (German wind and solar energy operator) for over 120 GWh of electricity from solar energy.
The deals show that renewable energy assets can ensure the supply of electricity at competitive and stable prices for large industrial customers who are committed to sustainability.

"Large quantities of greenhouse gases are currently still being released during conventional steel production. That is why we are driving forward the switch to a virtually CO2-free steel production process on a large scale. We are getting serious about green energy sources. By 2025, half of our electricity requirements will come from non-fossil sources, and by 2030 we want to be using 100% green electricity."
— Marco Hauer, Head of Energy Procurement, Salzgitter
